Every founder builds on exposed ground — shifting, wind-scoured, unforgiving. On Germany's North and Baltic coasts, one tree is planted there on purpose: the black pine. It goes in first, holds the dune, and breaks the wind so that everything behind it can grow.

The name
Rooted on the coast.
Blackpine takes its name from the Schwarzkiefer — the black pine planted along Germany's North and Baltic shores as a windbreak. Salt-tolerant, storm-firm, and shaped by the prevailing wind without ever giving way to it.
It is the most resilient thing on the dune, and it spends its life protecting what grows behind it. We couldn't think of a better picture for the work.
